Private Martial Arts Lessons in Trussville: Who They Are For

Group class is the heart of what we do, but it is not always the right starting point. Private martial arts lessons in Trussville exist for the times when one person, one mat, and one goal will get you further than a room full of people ever could.

Quick answer

We teach private martial arts lessons in Trussville for all ages, one instructor to one student. Privates are built for the nervous beginner, the student catching up, the competitor preparing for something specific, and the schedule that does not fit our class times. Call us at (205) 537-1115 and we will match you with the right coach.

Who actually benefits from private lessons?

Four kinds of people, and they want completely different things out of the hour.

The nervous beginner. Some adults and a lot of kids cannot make themselves walk into a room of strangers who already know what they are doing. A private removes the audience. You learn how to stand, how to move, and how a class runs, and by the time you join the group you are not the person who does not know where to put their feet.

The student catching up. Missed a few weeks for travel, sports season, or illness, and now the class is drilling something you never learned. One or two private sessions close that gap faster than a month of trying to piece it together from the back row.

The competitor. If you are preparing for a tournament, a belt test, or a fight, you need work on your specific problem, not the general curriculum. That is game planning, and it requires undivided attention.

The schedule that does not fit. Shift work, call rotations, and travel weeks do not care what time class starts. Privates get scheduled around you inside our operating hours.

Do privates replace regular class?

For most people, no, and we will tell you that honestly even though privates are the higher ticket option.

A private is the fastest way to fix technique, because nothing is generalized and every rep gets corrected. But class is where technique gets tested. You need partners of different sizes, styles, and skill levels, and you need the live pressure of someone who does not want you to succeed. You cannot manufacture that one on one.

The combination is what works. Privates to build it, class to prove it. Look at the class schedule and find the group sessions that fit around whatever private work you are doing. That said, we do teach students who only train privately, usually because of schedule or comfort level, and they still make real progress.

Can kids take private lessons?

Yes, and it is one of the most useful things a parent can do for a hesitant child.

We see it constantly. A kid wants to try martial arts, gets to the door, and freezes. A private with one of our instructors gets them on the mat with zero social pressure, and most of the time they walk into a group class within a few sessions like it was their idea. The same applies to the kid who is behind on belt material and getting frustrated, or the one who joined mid cycle. Privates pair naturally with our kids martial arts program rather than replacing it.

Who will you train with?

We match the instructor to the goal, and there is real range on our staff to match from.

  • Maxwell Tucker, owner, 5th degree black belt in Karate and BJJ purple belt, teaching since age 13.
  • Kimberly Ramkishun, head instructor, 2nd degree black belt in Karate and BJJ blue belt.
  • Todd Chappell, lead BJJ instructor and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt.
  • Jamar Fields, 2-0 amateur MMA, BJJ purple belt, wrestling background.
  • Japheth Hampton, state champion wrestler and MMA.

If you want your ground game fixed, you work with a black belt. If you want takedowns, you work with a state champion wrestler. Read more about each coach on our instructors page. This is the same staff that keeps us at a 5.0 rating across 158 Google reviews and more than 260 active members.

Frequently asked questions

Who are private martial arts lessons for?

Private lessons work for the nervous beginner who is not ready for a full class, the student catching up on material, the competitor preparing for something specific, and anyone whose work schedule does not line up with our class times. We teach privates for all ages.

Do private lessons replace group classes?

Usually not. Privates accelerate your technique, and group class gives you the variety of partners and the live pressure that makes technique real. Most students get the best results doing both, though we do teach students who only train privately.

Can my child take private martial arts lessons?

Yes. Kids privates are common for children who are anxious about joining a group, who joined mid cycle and want to catch up, or who are preparing for a belt test. Many kids start with a private or two and then move into class with confidence.

What does a private lesson cover?

Whatever you need. That might be striking fundamentals, Jiu Jitsu positions, takedowns, belt test material, competition preparation, or simply getting comfortable moving on the mat. We build the session around your goal before we start.
